PALMER, WILLIAM, 1803-1885.
Pietas Ecclesiae, or, Dissenters' text-book : being a review of England's hierarchy in its principles and practice.
London : E. Palmer and Son, Paternoster Row, 1841. 0. Scarce first edition. A very good original binding. 8vo. pp.14/[4pp.]/pp.309 .9" x 6" x 1" . Dark grey cloth with blind stamp pattern, corners lightly bumped. Smooth spine with gilt titles. Original yellow endpapers. Printed title and clean text throughout. A very good book. ** Sir William Palmer (1803-1885) was an Anglican theologian and liturgical scholar of the 19th century. The Reverend, afterwards Sir, William Palmer, Bart, of Worcester College, University of Oxford, was author of the Origines Liturgicae and Treatise on the Church of Christ (1838). The latter formulated the notion, called the "Branch Theory" that, provided that both the Apostolic Succession, and the Faith of the Apostles are kept intact, then there the Church exists, albeit in one of its branches. This was applied to the Anglican Church. He was an early supporter and influence in the Oxford Movement, but was superseded by John Henry Newman and Edward Pusey. Palmer initially supported the Tracts for the Times, but as opposition to the Oxford Movement grew, he withdrew his support, prompting a cooling in his friendship with Newman and a slow decline in his involvement with the movement.

WARD, REV.W.G.
The Ideal of a Christian Church Considered in Comparison with Existing Practice, Containing a Defence of Certain Articles in the British Critic in Reply to Remarks on them in Mr Palmer's 'Narrative'.
London: James Toovey, 1844. Second edition. Pp.xiv/601, new endpapers. Rebound in blue cloth with paper label to spine. VG.** "William George Ward, (1812-1882), English author and theologian, one of the leaders of the Oxford movement, which sought to revive in Anglicanism the High Church ideals of the later 17th-century church. He eventually became a convert to Roman Catholicism.Ward was educated at Christ Church, Oxford, and became a fellow of Balliol College, Oxford, in 1834. He was ordained in the Anglican church in 1840. Under the influence of John Henry Newman, later cardinal, he joined the Oxford movement, in which his role was that of an extremist pressing for submission to the Roman Catholic authority. Protestants strongly opposed his argument that the Thirty-nine Articles—the doctrinal formularies of the Church of England—were incompatible with the Catholic status of the Church of England. He was suspended from Balliol for supporting Newman in a series of pamphlets. After publishing The Ideal of a Christian Church (1844), which urged the Church of England to “sue humbly” at Rome’s feet “for pardon and restoration,” his work was condemned by the University of Oxford."
